Happy New Year!

It's been quite a while since I've properly blogged here as I ended up spending most of the past year "mini-blogging" my photography work over on Google Plus instead. I'm hoping to do a little better this year and wanted to start off with my favourite photos I took in 2013. This was a year I really grew in doing post-processing work, having acquired a couple suites of great tools (OnOne's and Nik's to be specific). I also surprised myself by starting to do a lot more work with black and white conversions, which I wasn't really interested in before.

It was pretty tough to narrow this down to only twelve, but here's what I came up with. Hope you enjoy and here's to a great 2014! Cheers!

It's been a little while since we've posted much on the blog, so I wanted to play catch up a little bit. For this installment of the photo walk summary, we take a look at some of Calgary's downtown architecture.

Project52 – City Hall

For this week's Project 52 'Red, White, and Blue' theme, I have a shot from our local Google Plus anniversary photo walk. While the theme originally sounded like it was aimed at the US, I appreciate the modification to include 'My Colours' as well – just in time for Canada Day!

Here we have the flags for the Calgary Stampede, Canada, and Alberta flying at Olympic Plaza in front of Calgary's city hall building. There's also a nicely distorted reflection of the Calgary Tower in its windows.

For this week's Project 52 'Architecture' theme, I was up at Canada Olympic Park (the site of the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary). I'm actually there almost everyday as my oldest attends the National Sports School there.

Anyway, whenever I drive by the recently completed Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, I'm often distracted by the angle of the red side of the building. I decided to make a stop there this week and finally take some photos of it for this week's theme.

Project52 – Wainwright Hotel

Here's my shot for this week's 'straight out of camera' theme for Project52. We went to Heritage Park (a historical village here in Calgary) for a banquet for my daughter's swim club. It was held here in the Wainwright Hotel and one of the great things about it was that it was after park hours, so there were no crowds to contend with.

For interest, I just couldn't leave the image alone, so I did end up tweaking it a bit via some of the preset filters and other settings in Aperture. I applied some levels, exposure, saturation, and other adjustments as well as using one of the free curves presets from OnOne. I think I was able to enhance the photo and give it a little more vibrance and depth.
