One of the interesting side effects from traveling around the city from soccer game to soccer game is that you are frequently given the chance to see the city from different perspectives. One of my son's games this season was on the artificial turf field on top of the SAIT parkade, which itself was new to me (I haven't been to SAIT in many years). There is a walkway north of the field that overlooks the parkade entrance. This walkway was also a great vantage point to downtown, which was where this photo was taken.

Friday's Photo – Cotton Candy Sky
One of the great weather features we get in Calgary are the chinook winds. These typically bring in uncharacteristically warm weather in the middle of winter conditions. Along with the winds, we often see some great cloud formations through the days and nights. This shot was taken on such a morning on my way in to work. I love how the pinks and purples are reminiscent of a big pile of cotton candy in the sky.
Friday's Photo - Puffy Clouds
Been feeling a little under the weather the last couple of days, so I'm a little late getting to today's photo. Technically, it's still Friday, so here it is! :)
A couple of weeks ago, at one of my son's soccer games, the weather was pretty inconsistent. Alternating between rain and sun throughout the game, it finally calmed down and started to warm up after the game had ended. The sky was filled with a lot of puffy clouds and I couldn't resist shooting a series of photos intended for stitching into a panorama. This panoramic was stitched together from only three shots that day.
Friday's Photo - First to the Ball
Well, the weather here in Calgary has turned around and the outdoor soccer season has finally gotten under way! Not to mention the allergy season, ugh.
This shot was taken at halftime at one of my son's games while I was watching my daughter play with a soccer ball on the sidelines. While the motion isn't readily apparent in the image, she was actually running at a pretty good clip for an almost-two-year-old. Or perhaps I'm getting old. Anyway, while processing this shot, I was tinkering around with the built-in filters (or 'Presets') in Aperture 3. What you see below is the 'Toy Camera' effect applied to the photo. This basically amounts to a bit of vignetting, lighting, shadows, and saturation tweaking. I like how it turned out, but what do you think?
Friday's Photo - Synchro Height
The Canadian Open synchronized swimming national championships have come and gone and I'm happy and proud to report that my daughter's team claimed the Gold in their event! (and a few others :)
So continuing with that theme, here's another one of my favourite shots from the Provincials competition that seems so long ago now. Here are two of my daughter's teammates performing another routine. The rest of the team is underwater providing support and a 'launchpad'. The girl in the air was sent flying from standing on the shoulders of the one you see in the water. These shots are always a challenge to capture because you only get one chance and they occur in mere seconds. After almost 8 years of practice, I still miss a lot of these, but I'm glad I was able to catch this one!
