Last night saw the official closing of City of Heroes, an online game I've been playing for the last 7 years. The servers were quite busy with players and devs alike stopping by to bid the game farewell. I'm certainly sad to see it go as I met a lot of amazing people and had a lot of fun in Paragon City and the Rogue Isles.
I spent most of the day extracting character data (thanks Titan Network!) and taking screenshots where I could – characters, costumes, bases, etc., etc. By the end of it, it turns out that I had taken 4,227 screenshots since the original announcement of the game's closure. This is nearly half of all the screenshots I've taken since 2005!
After taking all the screenshots I wanted to take, I spent the last couple of hours working my final character (V'rmylian, a Staff/Fire Brute) through Incarnate content in Dark Astoria. I had hoped to at least get his Alpha Slot Level Shift (T3), but ultimately fell short. I did manage to get his Alpha, Judgement, and Interface slots each up to T2 though.
As the end times approached, Virtue experienced a number of Mapserver disconnects. I, and many others, were sent back into the login queue more than once.
I somehow made my way to City Hall in the final minutes and was able to hold the torch one last time before the final disconnect.
Fare thee well, Paragon City. It has been a fantastic 7 years for this hero (and sometimes villain). *salutes*
