It's been a while since I've shot a sunrise, but like many Calgarians, I also took the camera out when we were presented with an incredible sunrise last week. I was actually just arriving to work and grabbing a coffee when I looked out the window. Our office building has a number of balconies, so I was able to go outside and take a few shots of the surrounding area.

I started with a shot of the next building over directly to the east..

Next, I looked northward, where you can just barely make out the downtown skyline behind the apartment building on the left..

Then I headed to the other side of our office building and took a shot toward the southwest..

I love that there are these balconies at work that we can go outside on. It sure beats trying to shoot these photos through the windows. I think I'll have to bring a big zoom lens to work one of these days. There's some great perspectives from here, including a fairly unobstructed view of the Rockies when it's not too cloudy.

CoH – Praetorian Invasion

As some of you may know, in addition to photography, I'm a bit of a gamer as well. To that end, I thought I would start adding some interesting gaming tidbits to this blog starting with this post. After all, screenshots are basically a form of photography for virtual worlds, right? :-)

All's well in Atlas Park

One of my favourite games, City of Heroes, was updated today to a new version they're calling "City of Heroes Freedom", which introduces a hybrid Free-to-Play/Subscription model. This release also continues the Praetorian alternate dimension storyline where the Praetorian Earth super-powered beings begin to invade Primal Earth. This began in-game with a developer initiated event last week on the brand new 'Exalted' server where the Praetorians launched an attack on Atlas Park! Oddly enough, I wasn't really looking for the attack, but happened be online at the time, so I happily joined in the fray.

First we saw some War Walkers stomping their way in..

Next came along some Hamidon Seeds.. And there was much dying when they showed up..

Somewhere in there, the actual Praetorian Guard made their appearance known..

(you can just make out Neuron and Dominatrix on the left and Chimera is in the black cloud on the right)

Friday's Photo – Back to Alberta

I thought I would finish up with the photos from our trip to Kelowna last summer with a few more shots I took as we drove back home to Alberta. Of course, the dominant land feature along the way were the Rocky Mountains, which usually makes for some nice scenery.

Friday's Photo – Old Tree

When we were in Kelowna last summer, we took a day to wander into Penticton and Summerland to visit the in-laws. There was a playground near their house in Summerland with a couple of areas for my daughter to play in. Nearby, there was this large and obviously old tree. Here's a couple of closeup shots I took of the trunk of the tree, which probably measured 3 feet or thereabouts at its widest.

I also took this opportunity to experiment with some black and white conversions. The results you see here are thanks to the free Aperture presets from onOne Software:

Friday's Photo – Kelowna Bridge

It would seem that it's been a lot longer since I've been to B.C. than I had originally thought. When I was there a couple of months ago, I took a shot of what I thought was the Kelowna Floating Bridge, but after a bit of searching to see if I could find the proper name for it, I learned that the bridge I vaguely remember was actually decommissioned in 2009. It was replaced by the William R. Bennett Bridge in 2008. This photo was taken from the passenger seat after we had crossed the bridge heading into West Kelowna.
