As I mentioned in our previous post, I was fortunate enough this year to finally be able to attend the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo after having missed it for many years. Now, one expects to spend a fair bit of cash when attending something like this (which I did), but I do regret not having budgeted a little bit extra, especially for geeky toys and figurines, because there was just so much I wanted to buy.

Here's a shot of the few things I did get.. A flat-bottomed dice bag from Dragon Chow, a knitted Jayne hat keychain from the Alberta Browncoats (sadly, they were out of the actual hats and were furiously knitting more right at their booth), and some Dungeons & Dragons related buttons from WereGeek:

The Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo was held last weekend on June 17-19.. Just the thing for Father's Day! :)

I had a great time all weekend there with my kids, despite having scheduling conflicts with every single one of the panels I wanted to see (I ended up seeing none of them </sadpanda>). However, I did spend a lot of time meeting webcomics creators like Ryan North, David Malki !, Alina Pete, and Ethan Nicolle. Not to mention spending a lot and getting their books, autographs, and sketches.

One of the oddest things I noticed about my attitude toward the Expo this year was that I was much more interested in the webcomics folks vs. the veteran 'mainstream' creators who had done work with Marvel, DC, and others. This probably has to do with the fact that I read webcomics pretty regularly, but haven't bought a 'traditional' comic in a very long time. Of course, that didn't stop me from digging into my comic collection to find comics and posters for the artists and writers to sign, something I hadn't done in many years. It was an honour to have been able to meet and chat with some of my favourite creators like Stuart Immonen, Gail Simone, Joe Jusko, Tim Sale, and others.

Besides meeting comics creatives, there were a lot of sights to see throughout the show. This year, I remembered to bring my camera and took a number of photos of the interesting displays and, of course, the cosplayers.

You can find the start of the photo set on Flickr here. Over the next couple of days, I'll post more as I get a chance to review and upload them. Enjoy!

Friday's Photo – Chicken, Potato, and Broccoli

In my continuing adventures to grow and develop my photography skills in different areas, I thought I would take a shot at some food photography. Having made a tasty dinner one night that looked photogenic, I set about assembling a plate of food to shoot before I ate it. The setup was fairly simple as I'm not actually setup for studio shooting. I just cleared some space on my desk in my home office, turned on the lights, and used the on-camera flash. The food itself is a simple chicken schnitzel, with a loaded baked potato, and some cooked broccoli.

Today's photo comes from the archives from late last year. I was wandering through the neighbourhood one evening and noticed the interesting gap of sky between the clouds as the sun was setting. I would later learn that this is a typical formation from a chinook arch. This photo was taken in a future construction zone and the water you see is actually fairly shallow, as it is just a little flood of rain and/or melted snow in a few future house lots.

Friday's Photo – Downtown via SAIT

One of the interesting side effects from traveling around the city from soccer game to soccer game is that you are frequently given the chance to see the city from different perspectives. One of my son's games this season was on the artificial turf field on top of the SAIT parkade, which itself was new to me (I haven't been to SAIT in many years). There is a walkway north of the field that overlooks the parkade entrance. This walkway was also a great vantage point to downtown, which was where this photo was taken.
