As some of you are probably aware and/or have been able to figure out, my daughter is a competitive synchronized swimmer. Last month, I was the official photographer for the Provincials competition and took thousands of photos (still available to order! </shameless plug>). Interestingly enough, the Canadian Open Nationals competition is currently underway right here in Calgary!

To that end, I thought I would dig out one of my favourite shots from the Provincials that I took of my little girl. Here she is during her duet – she's upside-down, being boosted underneath by her duet partner, while she does the splits. One of the things I enjoy most about shooting sports is being able to capture those split-second moments where, such as in this case, the big water splash is frozen in time.

Friday's Photo – Spring Snow

Last week, Calgary experienced a large dump of heavy wet snow after a stretch of nice warm spring weather. Of course, this is really no surprise to those of us who live here and see this year after year. If I remember right, the city saw around 20-30 cm of the white stuff accumulate this time around. That was about how much we saw in our area and the snow I shoveled off our driveway managed to create snow banks about 1-2 feet high.

Here's a shot of the snow that collected along the railing of my deck. There was a good 3-4 inches on the deck itself.

Photo Lightboxes – A Poll

I've been experimenting with adding a lightbox to the photos you find on our site. For those that don't know, lightboxes are those pseudo pop-up boxes that typically allow you to view a larger version of a given image or thumbnail. Of course, these have been abused in other ways (e.g. ads, surveys, and the like) and so may be a turn-off to some folks.

You can take a look at what I've done by checking out our last two photo posts here and here. Click on the links below the images to see what they do.

To get some feedback, I thought I would put together a quick Facebook Poll using their fancy new Questions feature. Please take a moment and add your thoughts. Here's a direct link to the poll. Thanks!

Friday's Photo – Power Lines and Street Lights

This week's photo is another shot of the sky shortly before sunset almost a year ago. This was among the batch of photos from my first month with my shiny new 7D. For this shot, I was hoping to get a nice view of the sky as it darkened, but being in the city, the power lines and street lights tend to get in the way. Also, I was out and about running errands, so I couldn't get to a spot with a clearer view. Instead, I opted to try silhouetting the lights and power lines against the sky. Looking back on this, I probably could have composed the shot a little better, but I still like how it turned out.

Friday's Photo – Mountain Sunset

Well, it's been a little quiet around here of late, so I thought it would bring a regular photo feature to the site. Each week, I will post a photo from my library, possibly with a little bit of commentary. I was inspired to do this by a lot of the photographers I follow on Twitter, even though they typically manage to post a photo every day. I hope you enjoy this endeavour and your feedback and comments are certainly welcome and appreciated!

First up is a mountain sunset I shot while I was trying out the recently released Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II zoom lens. This was shot from the SE end of Calgary back in February.
