The Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walk was held on July 24th, 2010. This is a giant event where photographers take to the streets of their locale and walk around taking pictures. This year saw 1,111 photo walks and 33,483 participants from all over the world.
I didn't know about this event until a co-worker mentioned it to me. Unfortunately, the Calgary/Inglewood photo walk that he was going to was already full, but I found that there was plenty of room in the Calgary/Downtown photo walk, so I signed up.
The group gathered at the Suncor Energy Centre (formerly the Petro-Canada Building) on a bright and warm Saturday afternoon. Once settled, our group leader welcomed everyone and briefly outlined the planned route. The formalities complete, we arranged ourselves for the obligatory group shot:
After that, we headed north on 1st Street SW, east through the park by the James Short Parkade and into Chinatown. Up to this point, we had largely been moving en masse, but as we made our way over toward Eau Claire, the group started splitting off, largely depending on each person's own pace. We briefly set foot on Prince's Island Park, but it was mostly closed for the Calgary Folk Music Festival.
The final stretch had us heading south along 3rd Street SW, and then turning eastward to walk down Stephen Avenue. The rendezvous point was at the Bistro in Art Central. As everyone gradually trickled in there, we settled down, enjoyed some drinks and snacks, passed cameras around to look at LCD screens, and generally chatted about photography.
I had a great time shooting the sights and meeting some wonderful people with so many diverse perspectives on photography. This post contains just a few of the shots I snagged. Check out the rest of my WWPW Flickr set here.
The complete set from this adventure can be found in our own photo gallery here. Looking forward to next year's WWPW!
